Week two, day one

Pacing. Pacing, Pacing, Pacing.

The girls were inside one of the offices that they had changed into a bedroom, Vicky’s water having broken a couple hours ago. The men stood outside–well, Louis was sitting, Jabari was pacing back and forth, back and forth. After all, it was his first child that was being born, without any proper medical care or treatment. The only training the girls had was Colette’s experience with her own children and the birthing book that had happened to be in the church library. Needless to say, he was worried, and the sounds of pain from the room weren’t helping any. He knew it was normal, but it was still hard to hear.

Suddenly it stopped, and the silence was so strong it almost hurt. And then, the babies cry.

Colette came out and waved him into the room. “It’s a boy.” The first baby of the group had been born. His parents gave him the name Jeremiah, and he was welcomed into the crazy world into a family of six.

Things had been going great, they had a garden going, a season had almost passed by. Vicky had just discovered that she was pregnant–Jabari was taking that one a little bit hard. This wasn’t exactly the world he’d wanted to bring his babies into, but it was the best he could do now, he supposed. Vicky was over the moon.

Angelia was still leaving the lot almost daily–Colette’s anger about that had died off as she came back safely every day, although the worry never did drop off. One day when out and about, Angelia came across someone different. She’d gotten very use to the faces she always saw, although sometimes they disappeared and were replaced. The only real safe place was the church grounds.

But this one didn’t fit. He wasn’t from the town. He was backpacking when Angelia came across him, driving the church’s truck. He was yelling at her to stop for him–probably desperate, looking for somewhere safe in this wasteland. Angelia stopped for him, but kept the doors locked and only rolled down the window. “Please, do you have somewhere safe–”

“Where did you come from?”

“Out of town. It’s. . . worse out there. They seem to come from nowhere. . .”

“Have you met anyone else?”

“A group or two, but they were travelling, trying to find somewhere safe. There has been so much death.”

“Have you seen a man named Timothy Daigle?” Angelia’s voice kept cutting off the hitchhickers, her eyes a bit cold. Perhaps she was just being an emotional teenager, but her voice waived a little mentioning her father’s name.

“I don’t recall so, but chances are he’s gone. Everyone is. Please, can I–”

Angelia had stopped listening, her eyes turned ahead, looking at the silent road in front of her, things eerily quiet. Without another word, her foot hit the gas petal and she pulled away from the man, leaving him as he tried to wave her down, calling and calling after her.

Day One

“We can’t go out. Not for any reason.” Colette’s voice was quiet, but firm, her position clear.

“But we can’t just sit here and wait.” Jabari said, taking the opposite position. “We’ll starve to death if we do.”

“If we find some seeds or somethin’, I can plant in the back. That ground is good.” Louis said.

Personally I couldn’t figure why we were even having this discussion. People were still out there. . . Maybe we could find someone, bring them back. It wasn’t that I really cared about them or anything, but the more people we had, the higher chance of survival. We needed to survive. Besides, maybe someone we knew was still out there. . . I couldn’t sit here. I couldn’t stay.

Angelia stood without a word, heading towards the staircase leaving the basement.

Colette followed her lead, standing. “Where are you going, young lady?”

“Out.”

“You can’t go out. It’s dangerous.”

“I’ll find us some seeds.”

“Angelia!”

She didn’t respond again, instead just walking away, the group still sitting in silence.

Meet The Cast

Screenshot-16

  • angelia daigle — sixteen (teen) — fighter — female — single
  • flirty — rebellious — evil — athletic
  • Daughter of the pastor of the church that they are in, Angelia was never the perfect pastors daughter, in fact, she was far from it. Constantly getting into fights, disobeying the rules and sneaking out after curfew, she ended up being sent to military school to hopefully straighten herself out. She returns home for a break just in time for the whole world to go bananas. The poor girl has the bad luck to head home and find her mother’s dead body, and a note from her father, hastily written and saying to meet him at the church. Well. . . she’s here now, and he’s not. She pretends like she doesn’t care, but in reality, she’s terrified about what might have happened to her father. Maybe that’s the real reason she keeps disobeying everyone and leaving the churchyard.

Screenshot-17

  • colette isbell — forty-two (adult) — cook — female — single
  • neat — natural cook — frugal — nurturing — friendly
  • Colette is a long time regular of the church, always cooking at all events and taking care of the little ones, too. She’s never had any little ones of her own because she’s never met Mr. Right, but she is alright with that. She is very much a motherly sort. She’s known Angelia since she was a baby and, in the absence of her father, is fiercely protective of her, but even Colette can’t keep the teenager from risking her life.

  • jabari sleater — twenty-three (young adult) — handyman — male — married
  • hypochondriac — irresistable — handy — perceptive — lucky
  • &
  • vicky sleater — twenty-one (young adult) — architect — female — married
  • great kisser — family-orientated — handy — hopeless romantic — artistic
  • Jabari and Vicky got married barely a year a ago and moved from the city to the small town of Appaloosa Plains. Vicky, especially, thought it would be a wonderful place to raise a family. Even though things have changed, she was likely the happiest to find the well stocked nursery. She still wants that family. Jabari is slightly more apprehensive now, wondering if there will even be a world for the children to grow up in. For now, the topic has been put aside as the attempt to live in the church with three strangers, everyday wondering if things are going to fall apart.

Screenshot-19

  • louis nance — forty-four (adult) — farmer — male — single
  • loves the outdoors — commitment issues — loner — easily impressed — green thumb
  • Living in a church with four strangers is not what Louis had in mind when he came to the town to participate in the farmer’s market. If it saves his life, though, he will do it. He’s already claimed the food growing aspect of survival, having made himself a garden in church yard. It’s a bit freaky watching monsters watch him, but as long as this supernatural protection holds up and keeps the church grounds safe, he will spend most of his time outside, trying to ensure the group doesn’t starve to death.

Setting

Barely a day ago, the world turned from order and secure to being ravaged by monsters of all sorts. People died in droves, what was once their home destroyed by beings that had never been seen before, or by people that were once their friends turned into beings that were never seen before. Five people found solace in an area that the evil did not seem able to touch: a church. Together they will try and find a way out.
